New show on Discovery Health network asks "Are you Fit to Live?"

An interesting new reality show premiered this month on the Discovery Health network.  Called Fit to Live, it's a show that raises the question of whether you have the strength, endurance and agility to escape a natural disaster, flee a burning building or pull your family from a wrecked car.  Contestants are put through simulated events to see whether they would, in a real situation, live or die.  (I promise I won't give away how most contestants fared.)

What's neat about the show is nobody is excessively obese or crazy like other programs.  It's about real people put in simulations that require a moderate level of fitness to 'survive'.  Contestants who don't pass the test at first undergo a month of fitness and nutrition counseling and re-take the test again.  Tests are not all disaster-related - some simulations, for example, simply test whether contestants could chase after their dog if it got off the leash.

The show is an interesting concept that any Nurse can relate to.  Could you sprint at full speed down a long hallway if a patient was coding?   Could you carry someone on your back to escape a burning room?  How could your level of fitness affect you and others in an emergent situation?  Even the most technically and clinically perfect RN in the world needs to take inventory of her fitness level, and think about how it could affect her work.
